Project VisionThe Spectrum Bulb project began with a challenge centered around a new product Luminance was preparing to roll out: a lightbulb that emitted colored light while being clear glass when not in use. New packaging was also needed because this would also be a product that was headed to big box retailers as a product marketed directly to individuals and not to builders, our usual audience.

Challenges1.) Clear and prominent reference to that specific bulb's color both on and off.
2.) Packaging could not be bigger than boxes currently in use for shipping purposes. 3.) Still must support all legal and brand information in a clear way. |
Proposed Packaging
With all the requirements in mind, I decided that seeing as much of the bulb as possible would be my focus. While the team did not have access to communication with our packaging supplier directly, they did assure us that anything from a die-cut peek window to a full clear plastic box was possible. With this information, I was able to start designing a completely clear box that could still house and protect the bulb efficiently, wasn't bigger than other packaging, but could be striking. The back of the box would be a solid color, mimicking the hue the bulb would light up in, allowing space for the warranty, barcode, and needed information. The sided would use halftone dot gradients to let the color extend towards the front a ways before fading. Best of all there would be no confusion that the bulb, when off could be mistaken for any other bulb.
